From Tommy Grieve   October 7th. 1854

Queenwood College | October 7th. 1854.

My dear Dr. Tyndall,

I hope you are quite well. I have just been up to the avenue to get wood for the bonfire last Thursday we had a hole holiday and we had the concert in the evening and chrades1 after; we had tea down in the long room. There is not much time just now and so I have to write rather fast. The number of boys has encreased to a hundred and foreteen.2 The boys play very much at shinty3 they do not play with wooden balls but with Indian rubber ones. It was raining all yesterday and part of to day. I am not going home to Scotland for it is too cold for Mamma and she is coming to Devonshire or the Isle of Wight.4 In the Midsummer holidays Mr Edmondson had built a new laboratory and he is making the old one into a class room it is either for the second or third class, he has finished the new one some time ago and the boys work in it, Dr. Debus has got his room up there and his little store room two by the side of it it is where the tanlk5 is where no water was in some the shinty balls come near the windows so we have to take care not to hit the balls in that direction. The fifth class go into number nine because there is not room in the dinning room for us all sometimes the forth class come in.

I remain | Your affectionate Friend | Tommy Grieve Esqr.6
