From Heinrich Gustav Magnus   12 Octob 1854.

Berlin 12 Octob 1854.

Theurer Freund

Dear friend

You will have been surprised, or perhaps you will not have been surprised, that I have still not answered your kind letter of 11th Aug.1 It arrived here after I had already left Berlin, and I only found it upon my return. If I am not mistaken, I told you already that I went to Carlsbad2 because of my eyes, and I have to admit that, contrary to my expectation, using the water did me good. In the meantime, Dove has returned and has brought me your greetings, he is quite full of delight about his stay in England and about the reception that he found there. He has also told me about experiments that you have shown in Liv[er]pool;3 however, our conversation up till now has only been very short, with the result that I could not understand him properly. Hopefully we shall get to read your work soon.

I am very pleased that Mr. Gassiot is satisfied with the polytrope.4 But Dove also told me in all haste that Foucault5 has shown such nice lathes in Liverpool. Please tell me a little about it sometime or other. – The payment has arrived from Asher in very orderly fashion.

To my sincere regret, Mr. Barlow came through here while I was still away. I am sorry that he did not call on Poggendorff or Riess, who were both in Berlin Give him my compliments and express my regret to him.

For the translation of my paper on black sulphur,6 my most profound thanks.

You ask which individual items I have selected for the electric lamp, this information would not help you in any way because I have only selected what I had not already received earlier from Duboscq.7 Incidentally, I am no friend of the electric lamp. It gives a very intense light but it is not regular enough; one would first have to train someone to deal with the lamp, for if one wants to regulate it, one cannot do anything else oneself at the same time, neither prepare other experiments nor talk much. You will remember that Dubosq had a young man who did nothing else but operate the apparatus. One will certainly get just as far with a very intense lamp, and I intend to construct myself a blower made of coal gas and atm. air that is supplied through a bellows, and to let this act on lime or magnesia. I am convinced that this will deliver a much better result, at least with regard to regularity. But the coals give the greatest intensity of light; there is in addition a general demand for them and consequently one has to have them.

I could not give Dove the devil’s8 to take with him as I received your letter too late. If you still want some, then I shall send them to you through Asher, possibly I shall have another opportunity in a fortnight. Just write to me what you want to have. The [devils] cannot be sent with the water, however. It is best to send the bottle and the figure, and you then fill it up there.

Many greetings from my wife [&] from Anna,9 who is now starting to continue in English.

Sincerely | Your | GM.

your kind letter of 11th Aug: letter missing. However, it was likely written in reply to letter 0956.

Carlsbad: Carlsbad, or Karlovy Vary, a spa town famous for its hot springs located in modern day Czech Republic.

Liv[er]pool: refers to the BAAS meeting at Liverpool (see letter 0950, n. 2). For Tyndall’s lectures see letter 0967, n. 4. Tyndall described the meeting in letter 0975.

polytrope: see letter 0870, n. 7.

Foucault: see letter 0975, n. 17.

my paper on black sulphur: see letters see letters 0943, n. 2; 0948, n. 4; and 0961, n. 7.

Duboscq: see letter 0826, n. 10.

devil’s: a Cartesian devil, or Cartesian diver, which is used to demonstrate buoyancy. A diver is ‘a philosophical toy, consisting of a hollow figure, partly filled with water and partly filled with air, and made to float in a vessel nearly filled with water, having an airtight elastic covering. This covering being pressed down, the air inside the vessel is compressed, and more water forces through a small aperture into the figure, which consequently sinks, to rise again when the external pressure is removed’ (OED).

Anna: likely Magnus’s daughter, Anna Magnus.
