From Thomas Archer Hirst   Dec 10th 1854

Broughton | Dec 10th 1854

My dear John,

My last week’s work as a bachelor1 is close at hand. I am sorry you cannot come on Monday week but glad at the cause.2 On Tuesday week I start for Ireland on the 27th I shall be married. Now my boy decide to come after me.3 After the 21st it will be well to give yourself a holiday. I shall not pass through London on Tuesday week write before I go and tell me your decision. Anna4 asks me in every letter. When I get to Ireland I will write to tell you where to come to. If you are there on the 25th or the 26th it will suffice but sooner will suit us all better. Anna has been ill all the week with a violent attack of toothache which I am glad to say is now relieved.

Yours affectionately, Tom

(Turn over)

John!5 | Send the enclosed passport6 to the French consul, 36 King William Street, City to be visèd.7 Pay for it and send it me immediately telling me how much it has cost. | Tom.

My last week’s work as a bachelor: Hirst was to marry Anna Martin in December 1854 (see letter 0975, n. 25). See also letters 0983, n. 18 and 1021.

cannot come … glad at the cause: see letter 1017, nn. 5 and 7.

decide to come after me: Tyndall would in fact not attend the wedding of his closest friend (see letter 1020).

Anna: Anna Martin.

John!: this postscript appears on the back of the letter.

enclosed passport: Hirst had posted his passport to Tyndall and requested that he go to the French consul to have it viséd (see letter 1020).

visèd: misspelling of viséd, the ‘term for an entry or note on a passport’ (OED).
