To Thomas Archer Hirst1

My dear Tom,

It is some time since I have been so sorely smitten as lately2 – I am now gradually getting over it & trust when I next write to you to be able to report my complete restoration. Kind remembrance to Anna.

as ever yours | John

My head is weary just at the moment & therefore I write but little.

RI MS JT/1/T/598

15 March 1855: The letter includes the date ‘March 16th 1855’, which is not in Tyndall’s hand. However, Tyndall left London on the afternoon of the 16th and met Hirst at Broughton. March 15 seems more likely date as he recorded the following in his Journal: ‘Head heavy. […] My head was so bad that I felt unable to enter upon the discussion [at the RS] of the subject [of magnetism]’ (RI MS JT/2/13c/736).

so sorely smitten as lately: see letter 1055, n. 1.
