To Thomas Archer Hirst

My dear Tom

I forgot when I expressed my gladness at your coming that I had already engaged to Pinner to Col. Wynne1 on Sunday next – I cannot get off the engagement as Mrs Wynne came here to see me & to her I have passed my word. Du Bois also tells me that Saturday week the lecture will be more important. He enquired cordially after big Tom Hirst this morning. I propose then that you defer your journey for a week.2 What say you?

Yours affectionately | John
