<text missing> the last week I have felt nothing that I could dignify with the name of a headache although I have worked sufficiently at times to bring it on if I were so disposed. I feel greatly changed indeed – from a mere child in strength I am becoming a man, and a man’s hopes fill my heart as a man’s vigour accumulates there. I can even smoke without feeling the slightest bad effect. Wine I cannot yet take – it soon clouds my brain, but the beer is not too strong for me.1 I know you will like to hear this & therefore I thought refusing myself the aforesaid brief holiday I should be giving you pleasure also
affectionately John
