To Thomas Archer Hirst

My dear Tom.

You are a good hospitable fellow. Be assured of it if I could I should throw the claims of the Westminster1 overboard, but I engaged to furnish half a sheet and must keep my engagement. I shall want you to do something for the Phil Mag.2 next week – But I hope to be able to start from Southampton on Friday next.3 I think I must ask Anna to have the kindness to ask her brother John4 to have a look out for a lodging for me. Your last letter5 interested me greatly – I think it would be no harm to tell the lads in earnest words that each might do his duty, irrespective of outstripping his neighbours – I would hope however that in the ardour of the work all jealousy is forgotten. I shall be with you tomorrow in good time, as I purpose starting by the 10o/c train.

Your affectionate | John
