To Thomas Archer Hirst   July 23. 1855

July 23. 1855

My dear Tom

I wrote to you yesterday1 (Sunday) but left my letter at home and lest I should not get back again before post time I scratch a line to tell you of my arrival in London – I started on Saturday morning2 & reached London the same night. Today I am to attend a conference of the examiners3 and it was this that brought me home so suddenly. I will take a run down to you soon as I want to get the rumble and turmoil of Paris clean out of my head. I suppose you will be soon opening4 – Mrs Whitehouse informed me that you were in London on Friday last – You may be in it now for ought I know but my surmise is that you came up on some school business and returned immediately. Give my love to Anna – She would be in third heaven I am sure amid the shawls and jewels of the great exhibition.5

Your affectionate | John | Monday.
