My dear Tom
I was just about to post the enclosed to Wright1 when the thought occurred to me that you might possibly not like it. I therefore send it through your hands – I know very well that the privacy of a man’s home may be invaded by his nearest friend, and besides this I know it would be too bad to think of eating up your substance for the length of time I purpose stopping in the country – If you would be content to make me pay my way I should be content to live with you, but I dont care whether I do or not for when I am within 5 minutes walk of you I have all that I desire. I was serious when I spoke to Edmondson today and I mean to turn his line of science to account but I should sleep more quietly & write more quietly at Broughton & hence my desire to fix myself there. On the whole I think it will be best for me to go to Wrights or if he has not room to pick out a little cottage for myself – I must leave these lodgings they are much too far from the institution so I purpose packing up my things in a few days, placing them in the Royal Institution & carrying my instruments with me to Broughton. I think you will see that my scheme is a reasonable one, and if so I will thank you to hand the note to Wright.
Affectionately Yours | John
