To Sarah Tyndall   Sunday evening

My dear mother

It is a long time since you heard from me – I write to you now from Glasgow, so you see I am a great wanderer, and besides this have has so much occupying my thoughts recently as to prevent me from writing to you. I have been here for some time but purpose returning to the south of England in the course of the present week. I have been attending a meeting of the British Association here and being one of the officers of the association1 a great deal of work has fallen upon my shoulders – I shall be glad indeed when it is all over and I can sit down in peace. If you would write to me on Thursday next directing your letter2 to me at

Queenwood | near Stockbridge | Hants.

I should get it at the end of the week when I return to Queenwood. I have taken up my quarters there for the autumn as the air is purer and the place healthier than London.

I am living here at present with my old friend3 in whose company I first went to Germany. We had made an excursion over Cumberland together and came on together to Glasgow. We have lodged in the same house, and will return to England together in a few days,

Goodbye for the present | and Believe me | Your affectionate son | John
