My dear Miss Moore
I am happy to say that my week’s idleness2 has been of immense service to me – I returned with the strength of a giant condensed into my little body. Could you not name either Monday Tuesday Friday or Saturday? The examination of candidates for the Artillery and Engineers takes place next week and I am down for the 9th and 10th[.]3 Any other day during the week it will give me very great pleasure to come – Indeed I was almost tempted to make a descent upon you yesterday – Mrs. Pollock had put your garden in my mind and I had a strong desire to test the scent of its flowers.
Believe me | ever yours sincerely | John Tyndall | Saturday night
Wellcome MS 7777/82–82a
Undated, but since Tyndall recorded in his Journal that he visited the Moores on Saturday 12 July the internal evidence dates the letter as 5 July (MS RI JT/2/13c/861).
my week’s idleness: his trip to Dorset and the Isle of Wight. See letter 1250.
I am down for the 9th and 10th: Examinations were held during the week 7–11 July 1856, and Tyndall invigilated 9–10 July.
