From William Pridie   8th Novr 1856

Comm Bank1 | Halifax 8th Novr 1856

Dear Sir

I have received through our London Bankers £14.13.7 and have placed the sums to the credit of Hirst’s2 account, which a/c,3 for money furnished by me to Mrs Booth4 is now closed.5

I will advise our Friend of the payment when I know his address—and on his return home, will send him his Pass Book, containing a statement of sums received and paid.

Thus terminate a series of Charitable acts such as are rarely to be met with, and which will confer lasting honor on Hirst and those of his Friends who took an interest in Frank Booth,6 and his Mother, two of the worthiest objects of Charity that ever lived.

I remain | Yours Ever | Wm R Pridie

Comm Bank: Halifax Commercial Banking Company, Yorkshire.

Hirst’s: Thomas Hirst.

a/c: account.

Mrs. Booth: Sarah Booth.

is now closed: Tyndall provided these funds to cover those furnished by Thomas Hirst to Sarah Booth, the mother of Hirst’s friend Francis Booth. Tyndall had notified Hirst that he would do this (see letter 1283, John Tyndall to Thomas Hirst, 9 October 1856, Tyndall Correspondence, vol. 5). Tyndall often assisted Hirst in times of financial need, as Hirst had done for him previously.

Frank Booth: Francis Booth (d. 1853), son of Sarah Booth and a mutual friend of Tyndall and Hirst. In 1851, he became ill with tuberculosis and his health deteriorated quickly. See R. Barton, J. Rankin, and M. Reidy (eds), The Correspondence of John Tyndall, Volume 3: The Correspondence, January 1850–December 1852 (Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh Press, 2017).
