Zürich, d. 2 ten Dec. 1856.
Lieber Tyndall,
Zurich, 2nd Dec. 1856.
Dear Tyndall,
I shall make haste to answer your inquiry about the maps which Desor mentions,1 because I know from my own experience how unpleasant it is when one is held up in a scientific investigation by the fact that one does not have the necessary material at hand.
The maps have been published, two maps of the entire Aare Glacier2 and one of a narrow horizontal strip, on which is drawn, among other things, how a line which was originally straight has gradually become crooked in four successive years through the advance of the glacier. Along with these there are also a number of other plates with drawings regarding the theory of glaciers. These [plates and drawings form part of] the work which is considered by geologists here to be one of the most important on the theory of glaciers.
The complete title is:
This first part, the only one which has ever appeared, also has the following special title:
So that you can see roughly what is in the book, I have made a summary of the index, which is on the enclosed pages,6 on which I have at the same time added the number of pages which is spent on each chapter.
Should this work not be available in London’s natural science libraries, then it will certainly be a very suitable acquisition. I cannot tell you the price exactly. Escher von der Linth thought approximately 50 francs.
In addition to all this, I would like to draw your attention to one other small book:
Die Gletscher der Jetztzeit by Albert Mousson, Zürich, 1854.7
It is only a popular compilation and probably does not contain any facts that you do not already know, but there are a great many citations in it that can perhaps be of use to you. I am taking the liberty of sending it to you by way of a bookseller, with the request that you kindly accept it as a small token of my friendship. I would send it by regular mail, but as far as I know, one cannot send books to England from here in a postal wrapper.
Should I be able to be of service to you in any other regard, then it will always be a great pleasure for me, and I ask you to turn to me without further ado with any tasks which can be taken care of in Switzerland.
Be so good as to give Hirst my kind regards, and to give him my thanks as well for the translation of my papers.8 I have noticed with these translations, as earlier with others which you had prepared, that in some difficult passages they are clearer & more understandable than the original. Perhaps that is due in part to the characteristic brevity & precision of the English language, but in a large part it is, at any rate, the credit of the translator.
With kind regards | Your | Clausius.

Desor, Système glaciaire ou Recherches sur les Glaciers, leur Mécanisme, leur ancienne extension et le rôle qu’ils ont joué dans l’histoire de la terre, was a planned multivolume work, the first part of which was the only one to be published (see n. 5).
