Monsieur

Sir
Mr Auguste Sécrétan1 is currently absent for a few days, which is why I am taking advantage of this opportunity to write to you in his place. Your instruments are close to completion and may be finalised within the week. With the exception however of the optical device designed to repeat my experiments. I would like to take advantage of your desire to repeat those experiments to come and perform them, myself, at the Royal Institution.2 We will agree together about the day, if you please; and, before then, I even hope to have further improved the positioning of the instruments.
Mr Sécrétan asked me to tell you that it is by no means necessary for you to send the payment before the devices are dispatched.
Please do accept, Sir, the assurance of the perfect cordiality with which I have the honour of being your very humble and much devoted servant.
J. Lissajous
