From Juliet Pollock   Wednesday. 26th. August | 1857

2 Dorset Place. Tunbridge Wells. | Wednesday. 26th. August | 1857

My dear Mr. Tyndall

The object of my present note is to let you know that we are at Tunbridge Wells1 and that we have a room very much at your disposal. If you liked to come from the Saturday morning to the Monday night, a return ticket would serve your purpose but we should of course be very glad if you could stay longer with us. You will get this on Thursday, tomorrow, and you can let us know by Friday whether you can come next Saturday.

I was very sensible of the kindness of your last letter,2 and I feel it to be true that it is as much the duty of a woman as of a man to combat with despondency. I have done so, not without success, and I am able to show by my daily cheerfulness that I value those high blessings that are left to me; yet there is a shadow from the past cast over my onward path that must be an abiding one.

This is a very pretty, rural country, and may be pleasant to you as a contrast with the magnificence you have left—it must be as a contrast, for your imagination can hardly be equal to that of Walter,3 who when he had climbed one of the little rocks with which our common here abounds, shouted out that he believed himself at the top of Mont Blanc!4 After all, when I say that your imagination cannot equal, my true meaning is that your judgment is more informed. It will be a great pleasure both to my husband5 and me to walk and talk with you here and to listen to all your adventures demonical and otherwise.

I am about now to set off on a drive with my boys.6 Walter has begun latin.

Yours always, most truly | Juliet Pollock
