From Thomas Archer Hirst   Augst 30th / 57

26 Rue de Lacépède | Paris. Augst 30th / 57

Just a word my dear John before I go out for my walk to tell you that on leaving you1 and proceeding to the Rue de Lacépède2 I was fortunate enough to meet with a pleasant little room on the second story which I have every reason to think will suit me for the winter. I have been at work pretty closely since my return completing my journal and so forth, yesterday only I began breaking the way towards my mathematics. To day I must begin to put my good resolutions for maintaining health into practice. I must go somewhere but where I know not, there is the mischief. How are you, and where are you? Has Huxley returned?3 John Martin starts for Ireland in a day or two and will be the bearer of this and other letters. I found I had forgotten to give you the key of the Theodolite4 box so I enclose it. Good bye dear John may your good health long remain with you and may I always remain

Yours affectionately | T A Hirst

RI MS JT/1/H/234

on leaving you: Hirst had joined Tyndall in the Alps since 13 July and they departed each other’s company on 25 August in Paris (Journal, JT/2/13c/1031).

Rue de Lacépède: a street in the Jardin des Plantes in Paris.

Has Huxley returned?: Thomas Huxley had joined Hirst and Tyndall in the Alps from 10–22 August to summit Mont Blanc, though he did make the summit (Journal, JT/2/13c/1002, 1030). Hirst and Tyndall left Chamonix on 22 August and Huxley remained to explore more in the Alps with their guide Simond (see letter 1426). He returned to London by 3 September (see L. Huxley (ed.), Life and Letters of Thomas Henry Huxley, 2 vols (London: Macmillan and Co., 1900), vol. 1, p. 146).

Theodolite: see letter 1353, n. 11.
