From James David Forbes   23 oct 1857

My Dear Sir

I am obliged to you for sending me a copy of your Paper on Glaciers from the Philosophical Transactions1 as well as for numerous former papers on different subjects with which you have favoured me.

I have also to thank you for the friendly opinion which you express in your accompanying Letter2 of my Observations on Glaciers.

With respect to my health, (after which you were so good as to enquire) I am glad to say that it is now restored to very much the level at which it has stood for some years past. I did not hope in my projected tour to Switzerland to add any useful observations, but merely to revive pleasant recollections & perhaps to improve my health. My illness at Folkestone3 (which probably had been some time coming on) entirely disappointed both these hopes. But I am thankful that it does not appear to have left permanent injury.

I shall of course be interested to receive some details of your newer observations and impressions.

I send by this post two small papers4 & remain

dear Sir | Yours very truly | James D. Forbes
