[16 January 1858]: the date is given by its relation to letter 1480, and that 19 January 1858 fell on a Tuesday. It is possible this letter could have been written on 14 or 15 January as well.

Dr Sinclair: see letter 1480, n. 12.

sails for New Zealand: see letter 1480, n. 13.

Capt and Mrs Sullivan: Bartholomew James Sulivan (1810–90) and his wife Sophia (née Young, 1809–90). Sulivan was a British naval officer and hydrographer (ODNB). He served as a lieutenant under Captain Robert Fitzroy on the second voyage of HMS Beagle, from 1831–6 on which Darwin was aboard.

the Falklands: while Sulivan was not a governor in the Falkland Islands (a disputed British territory off the eastern coast of southern Argentina), he did survey the islands while commanding the HMS Arrow (1838–9) and HMS Philomel (1842–5). Hooker had also visited the islands on the Ross expedition (1839–43).

two tickets: Frances had previously thanked Tyndall ‘for the promised tickets for your lectures’ (see letter 1480, n. 8 and n. 9).
