My dear Miss Moore
You are a true friend & comforter. Yesterday’s lecture2 was to me a horrible failure. —no matter. I must cast the thought of such things behind me and go on to something better. I shall be rejoiced to come to you sometimes at Petersham3 & am ready to undergo any amount of penance!
Ever yours J. Tyndall

[30 April 1858]: the date is given by relation to Tyndall’s journal entry of 29 April 1858: ‘Lectured: but did not by any means fill my own ideal: no matter I must cast defeat behind me and go on to better things’ (Journal, JT/2/13c/1072).
Yesterday’s lecture: Tyndall continued his ‘Ten Lectures on Heat, Considered as a Mode of Motion’ at the RI. See letter 1510, n. 9.
Petersham: an area of southwest London on the south side of the River Thames, where the Moore family had their residence. The wealthy Moores had close connections with the RI and frequently entertained Tyndall at their Wimbledon home.
