To Thomas Archer Hirst   Wednesday1

Wednesday

My dear Tom.

I am at length able to say that I start from here on Friday morning, and reach Paris at 11.55 on the same day. I go by Dieppe.2

I will take with me the books & tobacco.

I will put up at the Hotel Vivienne,3 and spend Saturday with you. On Sunday I proceed to Strasburg.4

Yours affectionately | John Tyndall

[14 July 1858]: the date is given by the addition of ‘July 14. 1858’ on the letter, presumably written by Hirst.

Dieppe: a channel port in the Normandy region of France and popular entry point by ferry from Britain.

Hotel Vivienne: a hotel in Paris, France.

Strasburg: Strasbourg, a city in eastern France. Travelers to Switzerland from Paris would take a railway to Strasbourg, and then another railway from Strasbourg south to Basel in Switzerland.
