From Intendant of Faucigny    11 Septembre 1858.1

Intendance Royale de la Province de Faucigny, | Bonneville, 11 Septembre 1858.

Monsieur,—

Royal Intendent of the Province of Faucigny, | Bonneville, 11 September 1858.

Sir,—

It truly pains me to learn of the difficulties that you are experiencing2 from the Guide Chef3 regarding the accomplishment of your perilous scientific endeavour, but I must also say with regret that these difficulties stem from regulations made to oversee the safety of travellers, regardless of the purpose of their trips.

Wishing nevertheless to be of service to you in this instance, I invite M. le Guide Chef today to consider your proposal, to make an exception to the regulation in his favour, as long as there is no danger to your safety and to that of those individuals in your company, and finally to be at your service within his means and responsibilities for the happy success of the expedition, the consequences and results of which do not only interest science but also the valley of Chamounix4 in particular.

Please accept, Sir, the assurance of my highest regards. | For the Intendant5 on leave, | The Secretary, | Deleglise.
