To John Murray1

My dear Mr. Murray

I return you my best thanks for the book,2 which I shall no doubt read with great interest—I have already dipped a little into it & have had occasion to admire the beauty and force of the author’s3 style.

With regard to Monte Rosa4 it shall all be laid before you in due time. I am preparing a work, the title of which is to be ‘The Glaciers,’5 and in which I purpose giving a clear exposition off all their phenomena. The book will also contain an account of the ascents that I have made and also a description & explanation of various interesting physical phenomena. Such descriptions will form breathing places—little islets thrown in amid the scientific flow of the work on which the general reader may find rest & refreshment. I am persuaded that such a work will be well received, at all events it is much needed, as no existing work at all comes up to our wants upon the subject.

I have no difficulty in finding a publisher for this book, but the publisher I should like would be yourself—For once in your hand I need not trouble myself further about it, feeling assured that you would do all things for the best.

Ever yours | J. Tyndall
