My dear Sir

I thank you for giving me the reference to Mr Page’s paper in Silliman’s Journal1 & especially for your interesting Paper on the Absorption of Radiant Heat by the Gases.2 I shall look with much interest to the fuller account of your results which I hope you will soon publish. I wish you had mentioned the length of tube you used, & the estimated percentage stopped. No doubt it would occur to you to try the effect of condensed gases & to see whether it follows the degree of condensation, or a less rapid law. I confess I am surprised at the magnitude of the effects you have obtained.

I remain dear Sir | Yours faithfully | James D. Forbes

your interesting Paper on the Absorption of Radiant Heat by the Gases: likely refers to Tyndall’s article ‘Note on the Transmission of Radiant Heat through Gaseous Bodies’, Roy. Soc. Proc., 10 (1859), pp. 37–9.
