Montpellier 1er Mars 1860
Mon cher Monsieur,

My dear Sir,
The dirt bands of the Faulhorn glacier2 seem to be of interest to you. I am sending you a small drawing of that glacier which will show you that it is quite simple, and that perhaps the advance does not play such an important role as fusion for the formation of those parabolic lines even on large glaciers. In the small enclosed drawing, I have placed the letters that relate to the memoir.3 I cannot wait to read the account of your excursions in the Alps.4

Charles Frédéric Martins: (1805–89), a French botanist and geologist at the University of Montpellier.
Faulhorn glacier: the Faulhorn mountain is above Grindelwald on the opposite side of the valley and some distance from the Eiger and its glaciers.
the memoir: It is uncertain which of Martin’s publications this refers to. Given the reference to Faulhorn, it is likely the book Remarques et Expériences sur les Glaciers sans Névé de la Chaîne du Faulhorn (Paris: Fain et Thunot, 1842).
the account of your excursions in the Alps: refers to Tyndall’s Glaciers of the Alps published in 1860.
