10th May 1860
My dear Sir.
For several days the state of my health has been such as to render it dangerous for me to dwell much upon scientific matters; but I had read a good portion of Prof. Maxwell’s papers previously and have looked over the remaining portion. The part to which I have devoted closest attention shows so much ability and accuracy, that I believe I cannot err in thoroughly recommending the publication of the paper in the Philosophical Transactions.1
Believe me | very sincerely yours | John Tyndall
Prof. Stokes | Sec. R.S.2
RS RR/4/181
publication of the paper in the Philosophical Transactions: the paper was published as J. C. Maxwell, ‘On the Theory of Compound Colours and Relation of the Colours of the Spectrum’, Roy. Soc. Proc., 10 (1860), pp. 404–9, 484–6.
At the end of the letter, a note was added which appears to be in Stokes’ handwriting: ‘1860 | Maxwell | by | Tyndall’.
