From Elizabeth Steuart   June 9, 601

June 9, 60.

My dear John,

I lose no time in writing to offer you my best thanks for your kind and most welcome present,2 received this morning, and which I shall highly value, as the gift of one in whose welfare I have felt such warm interest for so many years.

I trust your late excursion to this country3 has been attended with benefit to your health, though your stay was so short, still your native air would enliven and refresh you. I shall anxiously look for a few lines from the Alps, which I truly hope you may reach and leave in perfect safety.

And now, my dear John, accept the kindest and best | wishes of your sincere friend | E.D. Steuart

Tyndall was in Ireland from 14–26 June 1860, where Elizabeth Steuart lived, so if the typescript is correct in giving 1860 as the year, the letter may have been written a few weeks later. Tyndall left for the Alps on 2 August 1860.
