To George Gabriel Stokes1

My dear Stokes.

I am very sorry that you have been put the trouble of writing to me again2—but had I had any hope of being able to report in favour of Prof. Calvert’s paper3 I should have strained a point to get it done I have looked at it a little and heard it read before the society4 and my opinion is not in favour of its insertion in the Phil. Trans. But perhaps a reference of the paper to some other person would be safest.

I write by this post to my hostess5 directing her where to find the paper, and to send it to you. If you like to wait till the 26th I shall be happy to look more carefully over it and give you a more decided opinion.6

Yours very sincerely | John Tyndall

18 June [1860]: dated by context, See n. 2.

writing to me again: letter missing.

Prof. Calvert’s paper: F. G. Calvert and G. C. Lowe, ‘On the Expansion of Metals and Alloys’, Roy. Soc. Proc., 10 (1859), pp. 315–18.

read before the society: the paper was read before the Royal Society on 16 February 1860.

my hostess: presumably his landlady.

a more decided opinion: there is no evidence that Stokes asked again. The paper was not published in the Philosophical Transactions.

‘1860 Calvert & Lowe by Tyndall’ is written upside down below this date, apparently in Stokes’s hand.
