To Thomas Henry Huxley   Tuesday1

Tuesday

Dear Huxley,

Would you send this to Spencer for me?2 I read that excellent article of yours in the

Saturday.3 Francis4 is in ecstasy with it and wants to import a portion of it into the Annals.5 It was very nice of you to say those handsome words near the commencement.6

Always yours | J. Tyndall

[Late July 1860]: see n. 3. If this assumption is correct, possible dates are Tuesday 24 or 31 July.

Would you send this to Spencer for me?: there was presumably an enclosure, forwarded on to Herbert Spencer, which is missing.

that excellent article of yours in the Saturday: The evidence points to: T. H. Huxley, ‘The Glaciers of the Alps’, Saturday Review, 10 (1860), pp. 81–3. Huxley opens the review article, published on 21 July, by describing the work as the ‘mightiest evangel’ of the ‘sect of muscular philosophers’ who made up the Alpine Club, hence indicating Tyndall (without naming him directly) as the leading member.

Francis: William Francis.

… the Annals: Annals and Magazine of Natural History. The ‘import’ has not been found.

those handsome words near the commencement: see n. 3.
