[22 January 1861]: the journals of both Tyndall and Hirst mention this episode (Journal, RI MS JT/2/13c/1198; Hirst Journal, RI MS JT/2/32c/1567).
the examination: see letter 1762, n. 6.
the enclosed: letter 1762.
the superintending officer: the addressee of letter 1762, or his representative.
Turn over: the remainder of the note is written on the other side.
Frankland: Hirst noted in his journal that Frankland was to correct the papers (Hirst Journal, RI MS JT/2/32c/1567), and Tyndall noted that he had the papers conveyed to Frankland (Journal, RI MS JT/2/13c/1198). The load proved such that Frankland’s marking was late. When Tyndall received a ‘very tart letter’ (letter missing) from Captain Greentree in his response to his explanation (letter missing), he sent in his resignation (letter missing). It was ignored, and a further polite exchange followed (letters missing). See Journal, RI MS JT/2/13c/1198 and 1202.
