To Rudolf Clausius   26th July 1861

26th July 1861

My dear Clausius,

Accept my best thanks for your kind invitation,1 which it would give me great pleasure to accept were it in my power to do so. But I long ago pledged myself to a party of my friends; some of whom are now on their way to the Æggeschhorn, and some of whom are to accompany me, and my engagement is to go direct to the mountains.

In fact I am anxious to expel towns and science and every thing that could remind me of London from my brain. I am heartily tired and want rest.

Do you not intend to visit the neighbourhood of Zermatt? I shall be wandering about the Monte Rosa district for many days.

I had a pleasant letter from Magnus a few days ago.2 He and Mrs Magnus and their daughter3 intend to visit Switzerland this year.

My plans of returning are not yet complete: I shall probably finish with Chamonix;4 but I may return by Interlaken, and if so should be greatly delighted to see you there.

Will you return my best thanks to Mrs Clausius5 for her kindness to me, and with best regards to her & you.

believe me dear Clausius | Yours ever truly | John Tyndall

RI MS JT/1/T/181

your kind invitation: letter missing.

I had a pleasant letter from Magnus a few days ago: letter missing. The most recent extant letter is 1771 from 17 March 1861.

Mrs Magnus and their daughter: see letter 1771, n. 7.

I shall probably finish with Chamonix: it appears that Tyndall did not go to Chamonix. He left Zermatt on 31 August (Journal, RI MS JT/2/13c/1254) and according to letter 1809 he was at the Manchester meeting of the British Association, which took place from 4–11 September.

Mrs Clausius: Clausius married Adelheid Rimpham, who died in childbirth in 1875, leaving him to raise their six children.
