Friday 4th Oct.
My dear Mrs Pollock
Many thanks for allowing me to send you the manuscript.2
It is simply a sketch of my tour this year. I have written it to an imaginary friend just to allow myself a little freedom of expression—You can fancy it addressed to yourself if you like—though really the X is what it represents to mathematicians—an unknown quantity.
I will send you the rest as soon as it is finished though if what I now send pass the remainder is only of secondary importance.
Autumn is here! I left my trees green, I find them sere; their leaves are now shaken down and whirled about by the wind.
Goodbye | ever yours | John Tyndall

1861: Tyndall refers below to the manuscript of his ‘tour’. This is almost certainly a reference to Mountaineering in 1861, published 16 April 1862 (see also letter 1804, n. 9).
Send you the manuscript: for confirmation that Tyndall received comments on the manuscript of Mountaineering in 1861 from Juliet, see letters 1866 and 1870.
