Park House | Cambridge | Dec. 13/61.
Dear Tyndall,
I am engaged to write an article for the quarterly on Glaciers: I hope to do it for the Spring number.1 At present I am writing a memoir on the subject for the Royal Society.2 I had nearly finished it when at Manchester, but there I lost it, and to my immense annoyance have been obliged to write it all again. However it is nearly finished. Stokes is away just now but will soon be back and I will see him about Graham’s paper3 which I have not yet seen.
You mentioned Forbes’s intention of giving a course of lectures on glaciers at St. Andrews. I should like to see them if printed4 before I write the article for the Quarterly.
In the memoir I am writing, I have deduced my general results as to internal pressures, tensions, &c from a more general mathematical analysis of the problem, and am putting the whole together, to show how completely my mathematical results and the sliding of glaciers harmonize with your own views. I am not making the paper more controversial than I can help, but I am obliged to have a few swipes at Forbes to justify my own views. There never was such a set of gross mechanical blunders foisted on the public as by Forbes. Sir David Brewster told me at Manchester that he (Sir D.) was a convert to my, (or rather to our), views.
Yours truly | W. Hopkins. | If any thing glacial comes in your way, let me know.

I hope to do it for the Spring number: a review by Hopkins of several books on glaciers eventually appeared as: [Anon.] [William Hopkins], ‘The glacial theory’, Quarterly Review, 114 (1863), pp. 76–125.
a memoir on the subject for the Royal Society: William Hopkins, ‘On the theory of the motion of glaciers,’ Phil. Trans., 152 (1862), pp. 677–745.
Graham’s paper: Thomas Graham, ‘Liquid diffusion applied to analysis’, Phil. Trans., 151 (1861), pp. 183–224.
I should like to see them printed: a published version of these lectures has not been found.
