[Josiah Parsons Cooke]: probably Josiah Parsons Cooke (1827–94), an American scientist who worked at Harvard University and was instrumental in the measurement of atomic weights (CDSB). His 1854 paper on atomic weights foreshadowed the periodic law developed later by Mendeleev and others. America’s first Nobel laureate in chemistry Theodore Richards (1868–1928) was inspired by Cooke to pursue similar research.
I prize your gift: not identified, but possibly Cooke’s recently published book, Elements of Chemical Physics (Little, Brown & Co., 1860).
