Dear Hector,
I write in part to wish you a “happy new year” and in part to tell you that I have had some correspondence lately in which you will feel some interest. I was informed that a physician of our name and family resided at Gorey Co. Wexford, and I wrote a short note to him,1 asking him for whatever information he could give me regarding the Irish Tyndalls, he wrote to me promptly and informed me that all he could learn regarding the emigration of the Tyndalls into Ireland was that Six of them accompanied Cromwell,2 and after the war settled down in the Co. Wicklow, between Arklow and Wicklow,3—whence they branched off—some to Dublin, some to Co. Carlow, and some to the west. He had a brother practising as an M.D. in Montreal,4 who moved up from that place to another called Mona Mills.5 He tells me he has three sons,6 one of whom has passed all his examinations as a surgeon, and the two others he intends for mercantile pursuits. He sent me a curious old printed document, quite brown with smoke, printed 40 years ago.
It was headed
“Genealogy of William Tyndall7
born 29 of September 1760”
But perhaps you would like to see the actual thing so here it is.

On the back of the document is written these words:—I copy the bad spelling.
“This is the Father of Gardiner Tindall, and the Reason of him being caled Gardiner was after his grandmother, as her Maden name was Gardiner and First Cosin to Lord Mountjoy9 that was killed in the Batell of Ross10 in the year 1798. which laves the present Errell Mountjoy11 and Gardiner Tindall second cosins that <1 word excised>s family
John Tindall”
The name of my correspondent is also John Tyndall, I have written to him for further information regarding this William Tindall.12 He also mentions an Alderman Tyndall of Dublin as belonging to our family.
And now dear Hector goodbye—I hope you are getting strong again, and that you are trying to get strong and not careless of yourself. It made my flesh creep to read this last news from America—that brave men should be thus swept down is fearful. Kindest regards to your wife13 & sister.14
Your affectionate Cousin | John.
