The Deanery, Hereford. | December 6th2
Dear Dr. Tyndall
Very many thanks for your kind note3 and good wishes. We heartily wish you the same—many years of happiness and usefulness, for in that I think your happiness consists. It is always a very great pleasure to hear from you, we only wish we could see a little more of you; that is one of the reasons I regret our living so great a distance from London. When you can come to us,4 I need not say how happy we shall be to see you. You must recollect also that we now have a house near Malvern, where you may have a run on the Malvern Hills. The drive from Ledbury5 to Malvern6 through Eastnor Park7 is really beautiful, and I should so like to show it to you.
The Dean8 is flourishing and working for the rising generation as hard as ever. In that consists his happiness. He joins me in kindest regards and may you be blessed with health and strength to carry you through all your hard work is the earnest wish of
Yours very sincerely | Mary Helen Dawes.

[5 January 1863]: although 6 December is given as the date on the typescript LT noted that the envelope was dated 5 January 1863. Given that this appears to be a reply to Tyndall’s New Year’s greeting to Dawes in letter 1959 (dated 1 January 1863), we have taken the date of the postmark as the more likely.
December 6th: a more likely date is early 5 January 1863 (see n. 1).
your kind note: letter 1957.
When you can come to us: Tyndall had visited the Dawes the previous August (see letters 1902 and 1922), and the Dawes must have been eager to have him visit again. In letters 2106 and 2163 from the following year, Tyndall shared with Richard Dawes that he was having a difficult time finding the time to visit them.
Ledbury: a market town in the county of Herefordshire.
Malvern: a scenic town in the county of Herefordshire.
Eastnor Park: a 300-acre park overlooking Eastnor Castle with views of the Malvern Hills.
The Dean: Richard Dawes.
