To Rudolf Clausius   15th Jan 1865

15th Jan 1865

Dear Clausius,

I have sent off to the Dead Letter office1 directions to have the proof2 sent to you. The delay is due to stupidity of the assistant at the post office.

Yesterday I sent you a portion of the Lecture3 on specific heat4 – I hope it will fare better.

A very happy new year to you & Mrs. Clausius.5 I hope the authorities in Zurich have done all that they ought to do.6

Goodbye | Yours very sincerely | John Tyndall

Dead Letter office: the dead letter office is where undeliverable mail is held within the Post Office system. Clearly Tyndall had been notified that his letter to Clausius containing proofs had been undeliverable; he indicated here that he has provided them with the correct address.

the proof: for Heat as a Mode of Motion (see letter 1962, n. 1).

Yesterday I sent you a portion of the Lecture: letter missing; although see letter 1962.

The Lecture on specific heat: see letter 1962, n. 3.

Mrs. Clausius: Adelheid Clausius.

I hope the authorities in Zurich… all that they ought to do: a reference perhaps to Clausius’s invitation to a post in Braunschweig, which he did not accept (see letter 1965, n. 9).
