To John Couch Adams   8th May. /631

8th May. /63

My dear Adams.

I express no formal sentiment when I congratulate you, and wish you and your wife a long continuance of this world’s best happiness. Indeed your example has raised a kind of vague tending towards imitativeness in myself—an incipient desire to complete what is at present but half a life.

I heard yesterday that you were at Capel Curig2—Were I at present in that lovely region, I should be happy to offer my services as guide to Mrs. Ada[ms]3 through the “craggy chaos” of Snowdonia. I am sure I should take good care of her both on her account and yours.

Believe me. | ever yours sincerely | John Tyndall

Wellcome, MS. 7777/06

Adams: recipient identified by reference to marriage; John Couch Adams married Eliza Bruce in 1863 (W. G. Adams (ed), The Scientific Papers of John Couch Adams, 2 vols (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1896), vol. 1, p. xxxv).

Capel Curig: a small village in the heart of Snowdonia, western Wales.

Mrs. Ada[ms]: Eliza Adams (née Bruce, 1827–1919). In the original letter, the ‘ms’ in ‘Adams’ appears to be covered in residue from having been previously glued into a volume.
