RI MS JT/1/P/215

[28 May 1863]: the date is given by relation to Max Müller’s Friday Evening Discourse at the RI, ‘On the Vedas, or the Sacred Books of the Hindus’, delivered on 29 May 1863 (Roy. Inst. Proc., 4 (1862–6), pp. 135–40). William Frederick Pollock noted hosting Müller in May 1863 (Remembrances, vol. 2, p. 112–3), and this letter by Juliet being written on a Thursday with mention of ‘tomorrow afternoon’ gives a date of 28 May 1863. It is important to note that Müller had also delivered a series of lectures on language at the RI from February to May 1863, which were published the following year as Lectures on the Science of Language at the Royal Institution of Great Britain delivered in February, March, April and May 1863. Second Series (London: Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts & Green, 1864). Thus, the referred to lecture could have been part of this series, and the date of 28 May 1863 would still hold.

59 Montagu Square: see letter 1954, n. 2.

Miss Herries: possibly Isabella Herries, a cousin of Juliet Pollock (see letter 1550, n. 11, Tyndall Correspondence, vol. 6)

Max Müller: Friedrich Max Müller (1823–1900), a German-born philologist and Orientalist, who lived and studied in Britain for most of his life. He was one of the founders of the western academic field of Indian studies and the discipline of comparative religion (ODNB).
