To George Gabriel Stokes   8th June 1863

Royal Institution of Great Britain | 8th June 1863

My dear Stokes,

You were kind enough last year to inform me1 that you do not think the fact of my giving an account of an investigation at the Royal Institution previous to the handing in of the paper to the Royal Society would be any obstacle in the way of the acceptance of the paper.

I am this year in circumstances similar to those which environed me last year. I have a paper2 almost ready & by a tremendous shuffle I can have it in your hand by Thursday3—but to have to do this will press me terribly hard Would it matter if I lectured on the subject on Friday ev[eni]ng next4 before putting the paper in your hands, or must you have it on Thursday?

Yours very truly | John Tyndall

CUL SC—add 7656

to inform me: this does not appear to be in any correspondence from Stokes to Tyndall from 1862, so possibly this occurred in person.

a paper: J. Tyndall, ‘On the Absorption and Radiation of Heat by Gaseous and Liquid Matter. Fourth Memoir’, Phil. Trans., 154 (1864), pp. 201–25 (received at the RS on 18 June 1863).

Thursday: 11 June 1863.

Friday ev[eni]ng next: Friday, 12 June 1863 when Tyndall delivered his Friday Evening Discourse at the RI, ‘An Account of Some Researches on Radiant Heat’ (Roy. Soc. Proc., 4 (1862–6), p. 146–50).
