To Julius Robert Mayer   30th. July 1863

Switzerland | 30th. July 1863

My dear Sir,

Your letter1 has reached me amid the mountains of Switzerland. I can assure you it would give me extreme pleasure to meet you in London2 and I should be most happy to do all in my power to render your visit there agreeable to you.

But I shall not be in London until the end of August. I hope your arrangements will enable you to come when I am there. Mr. Joule I doubt not will be delighted to see you.

I am very glad that you have resolved to visit England. The British Association meets this year at Newcastle upon Tyne.3 Could you not go there? You would meet a great number of the scientific men of England all of whom would be happy to make your acquaintance—The association commences on the 26th of August & continues its sittings for a week.

You are now perfectly well known in England. It was only this morning that I received a letter from a scientific friend4 thanking me in the warmest manner for a copy of the translations of your “Abhandlung Zur Dynamik des Himmels”5 and expressing the very highest opinion of its merits.

I had 100 separate copies of the translation printed & distributed.

I did not send you a copy of my last letter to Prof[essor]. Thomson6 on the relative claims of Mr. Joule & yourself. I trust when you read the letter that you will not find that I have permitted your reputation to suffer.

Believe me dear Sir | most sinc[ere]ly yours | John Tyndall
