Dear Tyndall
I have been over the inclosed account1 with our books and can find nothing wrong as regards the number of copies supplied to you,2 or in the charges according to the scale which is attached to the proofs and on which the several orders for separate copies are written—But what I find very wrong is that Mr Askham3 should have allowed the account to run on for so many years without ever sending it in to you—I can only account for this neglect from my having given him instructions not to charge you and some other friends according to the usual rate, but to carry a portion of half the expense of the separate copies to the Magazine, which he has failed to do—Mr Gyde,4 knowing nothing of this arrangement, and finding these accounts open made out the bill in the usual manner and sent it in without mentioning the subject to me; and it was only subsequent to the receipt of your request to be supplied with a copy of our scale of charges that I became partly aware of what had happened—I now inclose the account as it ought to have been sent to you and if you find it correct, as I believe it to be, and will return it for receipt, I will forward you a cheque for the difference due on your cheque.
Yours truly | William Francis
Prof. Tyndall, F.R.S. &c &c
PS. I had given this letter to Mr Gyde to send to you when he informed me that he had omitted to bring forward a previous unsettled account but for which bills had been sent in. This he has added on at the end
