Royal Institution, | Saturday.
Dear good Friend,
I wish I could go to you, but I cannot.2 I am in the midst of work3 which it would be sinful to quit. I wished so much to go to Bath,4 but was unable to do so with a clear conscience. Give my kindest regards to Mrs. Dawes.5
Goodbye. | Yours affectionately | John Tyndall.

[October 1864]: this date was suggested by LT, and seems reasonable given the mention of the BAAS meeting in Bath which had occurred in September 1864. Also, the previous letter in this volume, dated 29 October [1864], indicates an important series of experiments Tyndall was invested in.
I cannot: previous letters in this volume to Dawes and his wife show that Tyndall found difficulty in finding time to step away from his duties to visit them. In letter 1961, he wrote to Mary Ellen Dawes that ‘I wish most earnestly you were nearer to London’.
work: see letter 2162, n. 3.
Bath: see letter 2138, n. 1.
Mrs. Dawes: Mary Ellen Dawes.
