Baslow Derbyshire | Wednesday
My dear Tom
I have sent this day the final proof2 to Mr Mattus.3 Would you, like a good fellow, take a last look at it before your departure.4 The proof contains the corrections which have already been made and the only new places are marked with a cross thus X. The printer is to compare this proof, now sent, at these points with the revise, and he will then see what alteration is needed. I have written to Mr Mattus, and given him the needful instructions, but I should feel more satisfied if the final revise had passed under your eyes.
Yours affectionately | John Tyndall
RI MS JT/5/12 (loose enclosed in a grey folder)
[21 December 1864]: the date is given by relation to Tyndall’s visit to Baslow. According to Hirst in his journal entry of 25 December 1864, Tyndall had left London on 20 December (Brock and Macleod, Hirst Journals, p. 1711).
final proof: probably J. Tyndall, ‘On the history of negative fluorescence’, Phil. Mag., 29 (1865), pp. 44–55. See letter 2198.
Mr Mattus: not identified, but presumably an assistant to William Francis who published the Phil. Mag.
before your departure: Hirst noted in his journal for 25 December 1864 that ‘On Sunday the 25th which was Christmas day I walked to Tyers Hill and arrived in time to join Thomas Burkitt and his pretty and graceful little daughter Ada Mary at dinner’ (Brock and Macleod, Hirst Journals, p. 1711).
