Tönning den 15tn Februar 1841.

Theurer Bruder! —

Du wirst gewiss einen Brief von uns mit Klander erwarten, wenn er so früh fertig wird soll er ihn mit haben, sonst kömmt Fuhrmann Häsler doch gewiss, und Du erhälst ihn mit der Schachtel. — [U]m Strümpfe bist Du wohl noch nicht verlegen diese Woche will ich neue Hacken hineinstricken. — Du erhälst auch das Dame und Schachspiel, von Dame sind nicht mehr als 12 Steine. — Dienstag war ich mit Mertens nach Lunden zu Ball, wo ich mich gut amüsierte. Ich tanzte von 6 bis 5 Uhr, darauf schliefen wir bis 10 und um 12 wahren wir wieder in Tönning. Bei Klieds ist ein kleiner Erdenbürger gekommen, wo ich Sonntag mit Hr. Bumb und Karl Weber Gevatter stand, — auch da waren wir ganz fidel, Ich sass zwischen ihn und den Pastoren, und da plauderten wir recht viel. Abends brachte er mir zu Hause. — Wir haben seit einiger Zeit zwei Bahnen eine bei der Mühle, und eine beim Hafen. Wenn es so beim Tauen bleibt, werden sie nicht lange mehr halten, bis jetzt hat es noch keinen Schaden gethan. — Diese Woche war Gardinger Markt, und wir hatten um 16 mark 8 1/2 Schilling Fährgeld und 1 Mark 2 Schilling in der Schenke. — Gretchen Peers hat ein Liebesabentheuer gehabt, Kaufmann Pauls hat um sie angehalten, sie hat aber den Korb ausgetheilt. — Lieber Ferdinand ich schreibe diesmal lauter Kleinigkeiten, daher kömmt es, dass der Styl so abgebrochen ist. — Ich muss nun schliessen, schreibe uns nur recht bald mal und recht viel wir hören alle so gern recht viel von Dir. — Na, hast Du ein Part gewonnen? — Grossvater ist ganz hergestellt, bis auf die Füsse die ihn des Abends ein wenig schwellen. — Er hat vom alten Schwarz Tropfen bekommen, die ihn sehr heilsam sind.

Precious brother,

You are sure to expect a letter from us with Klander. If it is ready in time, he shall have it, otherwise coachman Häsler is sure to come and you will get it with the box. You are not likely to be short of socks yet, I want to knit new heels into them this week. You are also getting the draughts and the chess game; there are only 12 pieces left of the draughts.

Tuesday I went with the Mertens to Lunden² to the ball, where I enjoyed myself. I danced from 6 pm till 5 am. Then we slept till 10 and by 12 o'clock we were back in Tönning once more.

The Klieds have had a little new arrival, I was there on Sunday with Mr Bumb and Karl Weber to be godparents. We were very jolly there. I sat between him and the Pastors and we chatted a lot. At night he brought me back home.

We have had two ice rinks for some time now, one at the mill and the other near the harbour. But if the thawing keeps up they won't last much longer. It has not done any damage so far.

This week was market at Garding and we made around 16 Mark and 8 1/2 Schilling on ferry fares, and 1 Mark 2 Schillings from drinks.

Gretchen Peers has had a romantic adventure. Merchant Pauls asked for her hand, but she turned him down.

Dear Ferdinand, I am writing about a lot of little bits and pieces this time, that is why my style is so disjointed.

I must close now, write to us very soon and very much, we all love to hear lots and lots from you. Well, did you win anything in the lottery? Grandfather³ is fully restored except for his feet, which still swell a little at night. He got some drops from old Schwarz which are very beneficial for him.
