Husum, am 9. Jul. 1844.

Schon lange, hochgeehrter Herr Hansen, gab ich dem Wunsche Raum, mit Ihnen eine Verbindung anzuknüpfen, von der ich mir einerseits so viele Aufklärung, andrerseits die Freude verspreche, ein so beachtliches Unternehmen wie die Herausgabe der Schl.-Holst. Lauenb. Flora fördern zu können, ein Unternehmen, dessen Mühen nur ein Botaniker zu würdigen weiss, der sich selbst den Weg beim Studium bahnen musste.

Allein so sehr ich auch eine Correspondenz herbeigewünscht habe, so war es doch mein Plan, Sie freudig zu überraschen, und hätte ich mich, wäre Ihr werthes Schreiben später zu mir gelangt, nach Föhr begeben, um dort und auf Amrum für Ihr Herbar zu sammeln, und Ihnen eine reiche Ausbeute seltener Pflanzen zukommen zu lassen, die nach meinen Vorspiegelungen Atripl. laciniatum L Pisum maritinum L Chenopodium botryodes Sm. Dianthus carthusianorum L Silene Otites Sm. u Rosa spinosissima L u Erythraea litoralis Fr. enthalten sollten.

Glauben Sie jedoch keineswegs, dass Sie durch Ihren Wunsch störend in meine Pläne eingriffen, sondern im Gegentheil schwankte ich lange selbst, ob ich der Dünentour nach Eiderstedt oder nach Föhr u. Amrum den Vorzug geben sollte, und da ich nun sehe, dass die Küste von Ording u. St. Peter eine so unerwartet grosse Anzahl seltener Vegetabilien bietet, so nehme ich freudig Ihren Auftrag an, und wünsche nur, dass ich denselben zu Ihrer Zufriedenheit ausführen möchte. Was die projectirte Reise nach Föhr betrifft, so gebe ich Ihnen die Versicherung, dass ich, falls ich im nächsten Jahre meinen Aufenthaltsort nicht verändert habe, gern bereit bin, alsdann einen Ausflug dorthin für Sie zu unternehmen, sowie ich mich überall bereitwillig finden werde nach Kräften Ihr Herbar zu ergänzen. Gerne offerire ich folgend Ihnen jedoch aus dem Bereich der Husumer Flora. Ornithogalum umbellatum L Atriplex latifolium Wahlenb Anthriscus vulgaris Persoon. Vielleicht wäre Ihnen auch Cakile maritima Scopol. ß integrifolia Koch willkommen, von welcher jedoch in diesem Jahre nur so wenig Exemplare sich finden, dass ich, ohne der Pflanze am hiesigen Standort den Untergang zu bereiten, dieselbe nicht füglich aufnehmen kann. Sollten Ihnen von irgendeiner Pflanze aus dem Husumer Gebiet die Vorräte ausgegangen sein, so bitte ich Sie, mich von Ihren Wünschen in Kenntnis zu setzen.

Auf Ihren Auftrag zurückkommend glaube ich noch eine Frage aufwerfen zu müssen. Nach der Bezeichnung der Standorte weisen Sie mich an, für Sie die wahre Rupp. maritima einzusammeln, jedoch muss ich glauben, dass sich Ihre Weisung auf Rupp. rostellata Koch beziehen soll, indem ich, soweit mir erinnerlich, die ächte R . schon in Ihrem Herbarium aufgenommen sah.

Mit grossem Dank würde ich es anerkennen, wenn Sie mir oberflächlich die Standorte, an denen Veron. Buxb . Tenor V. peregrina L Bromus erectus Hudson Potamog. nitens Web, Gentiana amarella L. Allium angulosum L., Convallaria verticillata L, Elatine alsinastrum L, Silene noctiflorens L Ranunculus flamula radicans Nolte Euphrasia verna Bellard. Linnaea borealis Gr. Corydal. claviculata Pers. Fumar. capreolata L Trifolium striatum L Carex chordorrhiza Ehrh

So angenehm mir auch Ihre werthen Mittheilungen über die von Ihnen bei Husum beobachteten Pflanzen sind, so hat es mich doch nur um so tiefer betrübt, dass manche der schönsten Sterne unserer Flora untergegangen sind, und keine Exemp. der herrlichen Wissenschaften mehr erfreuen werden. Wir bedauern den Verlust v. Anthericum Liliago, Hypochoeris maculata, Allium angulosum L, Geranium sanguineum L., Leucorchis albida Lindl welche weder am Mühlenteich noch bei Schauendahl zur Zeit vorhanden ist, denn all Standorte, an denen diese Pflanzen ehedem vegetirten, sind in Triften u. Kornfelder umgewandelt worden.

Schliesslich kann ich noch die Bemerkung anreihen, dass meine Versuche, die Pflanzen nach der Schmidtsch Methode zu trocknen, die herrlichsten Resultate geliefert haben. Besonders anwendbar finde ich sie auf saftreiche Pflanzen, indem Cochlearien, Aloe-Arten u. a. ihre lebendige Farbe behalten.

Für Ihr herzliches Anerbieten, mir seltene Gewächse mitzutheilen, sage ich Ihnen meinen geziemenden freudigen Dank und leiste Ihnen das Versprechen nach 3-4 Wochen meine Wanderung nach den Dünen anzutreten.

In Hamburg habe ich es mehrmals versucht, meine Freunde zur Sammlung für Ihr Herb zu bewegen u zu diesem Behuf eine Anzahl Pflanzen aus der dortigen Flora aufgegeben, allein da niemand der Bot. so recht hold ist, so waren meine Bemühungen vergebens.

Already for a long time, dear Mr Hansen, have I entertained the wish to establish a connection with you, from which I promise myself on the one hand a great deal of enlightenment and on the other hand the joy of being able to further such a considerable undertaking as the Flora of Schleswig-Holstein Lauenburg.² Only a botanist who had to make his own way through his studies can appreciate the labours connected with such a project.

As much as I had wished to correspond with you, it had nonetheless been my plan to give you a pleasant surprise. Had your esteemed letter³ arrived later, I would have gone to Föhr to collect there and on Amrum for your herbarium, to present to you a rich harvest of rare plants, which in my view ought to include Atriplex laciniatum L., Pisum maritimum L., Chenopodium botryodesSm., Dianthus carthusianorum L., Silene otites Sm., Rosa spinosissima L., and Erythraea littoralis Fries.

You must not think, however, that you have disrupted my plans in any way. On the contrary, I wavered for a long time, whether I should give preference to an excursion across the dunes to Eiderstedt⁴, or go to Föhr and Amrum. Seeing the coast of Ording and St Peter⁵ offers such an unexpectedly large number of rare plants, I gladly accept your assignment, and my only desire is to carry it out to your satisfaction. As to the projected journey to Föhr I give you my assurance, provided my place of domicile has not changed next year, that I will gladly undertake an excursion there for you, just as you will find me always willing to contribute to your herbarium to the best of my ability. I am pleased to offer you the following from the regional Flora of Husum:⁶ Ornithogalum umbellatum L., Atriplex latifolium Wahlenb. and Anthriscus vulgarisPersoon. Perhaps you would also welcome Cakile maritima Scopol. var. ß integrifolia Koch. But this year only very few specimens are to be found of it, so that I cannot very well collect it without thereby condemning the plant to extinction in the local habitat. Should you have run out of stock of any of the plants of the Husum area, I ask you to please inform me of your requirements.

To come back to your commission, I think I must ask one more question. Following the naming of localities you bid me to collect for you the true Ruppia maritima. But I believe that your instruction should refer to Ruppia rostellata Koch, as I seem to recall having seen the true Ruppia already represented in your herbarium.

I would be deeply grateful, if you could give me the approximate localities where Veronica buxbaumiiTenore, V. peregrina L., Bromus erectus Hudson, Potamogeton nitens Weber, Gentiana amarella L., Allium angulosum L., Convallaria verticillata L., Elatine alsinastrum L., Silene noctiflorens L., Ranunculus flamulavar. radicansNolte, Euphrasia verna Bellardi, Linnaea borealis Gr., Corydalis claviculata Persoon, Fumaria capreolata L., Trifolium striatum L., and Carex chordorrhiza Ehrh. [occur.]⁷

Even though I was pleased about your valued notes on the plants observed by you in the vicinity of Husum, they also saddened me all the more deeply, as some of the brightest stars of our flora have become extinct, and specimens of them will no longer gladden our glorious science. We mourn the loss of Anthericum liliago, Hypochoeris maculata, Allium angulosum L., Geranium sanguineum L., and Leucorchis albida Lindl., which at present are not represented either at the mill pond or near Schauendahl, because all the localities, which were once the habitat of these plants, have been transformed into pastures and cornfields.

Finally I can add the remark, that my experiments to dry my plants according to Schmidt's method⁸ have led to the most wonderful results. I find it particularly useful for succulent plants, while Cochlearia and Aloe species etc. retain their life-like colours.

Let me express my pleasure and due gratitude for your cordial offer to send me rare plants, and I promise to commence my excursion to the dunes in 3 or 4 weeks.

I have tried repeatedly to get my friends in Hamburg to collect for your herbarium and to send a number of plants from their local flora to that end, but as nobody seems to be very keen on botany, my efforts were to no avail.
