To Gottfried Häcker1    April 1845

Husum, April 1845.

Husum, April 1845.

The motive, dear Sir, which induces me to address these words to you, sprang from the wish to express my fitting gratitude for the beautiful Lübeckische Flora,2 which you have presented to Science, thus giving great pleasure to local botanists. In it you have not only provided a botanical elucidation of one of the most beautiful parts of our country, but have also offered a new resource for its study through your own research and accurate characterisation of the plants, a study the sublimity of which one can confront only in the conviction, that one has willingly offered one's strength towards its facilitation and its dissemination.

These principles have guided me during the few years in which I have devoted myself to botany. It has become very clear to me in the course of my researches, however, what an abundance of mental powers is required to be of service in Flora's magic world. I must confess that this realisation is well suited to discourage the best intentions, if the necessary mental powers do not provide the balance.

Nevertheless, I have striven since that time to conquer the difficulties which confronted me doubly due to a lack of adequate botanical resources and good instruction, to obtain a clear picture of the vegetation of the area in which I live, and to commence a good herbarium, the first requirement for botanical research.

Through exchange and purchase I have succeeded in increasing the number of my plants to about 5000 species. Now the wish to build up a herbarium as rich in plants as possible induces me to suggest to you the exchange of a few plants. While I will say more in a moment about the botanical treasures, which Flora has scattered not at all sparingly about these meadows, I may possibly be permitted to engage your kindness about the following plants, which are either completely lacking in this area, or which I, at least, was unable to locate again.

Utricularia major L., U. intermedia Hayn, U. minor L., which I do not have represented in such condition that it would comply with the requirements for preservation, and of which only the last is found here in stunted form, U. neglecta Lehmann; Circaea alpina L., C. intermedia Ehrh. for comparative examination, because I collected a Circaea here, which has inherited something from all of its three relatives and is closest to C. alpina, yet shows a conspicuous difference from specimens I have from other areas.

Scirpus parvulus R. & S., Eriophorum angustifolium Rth (the large form), Lepturus incurvatus Trin., Arundo litoralis Schrad., A. stricta Timm, Avena orientalisSchreb., Festuca heterophylla Haenke, Centunculus minimus L., Potamogeton obtusifolius Koch, Verbascum thaspiforme Schr., the red-fruited form of Solanum nigrum L., Erythraea linearifolia Pers., Atriplex sackii Rostcor. (according to Nolte occuring here also), Betula pubescens Ehrh., Salix viminalis L., S. purpurea L.

Of the indigenous members of the Husum flora I take the liberty to mention the distinguished representatives in relational order which are foreign to your area.

Zostera minor N., Ruppia rostellata Koch, Potamogeton marinus L., P. coloratus Horn, P. pusillus L., Hordeum nodosum L., H. maritimum With., Juncus filiformis L., J. tenageia Ehrh., Luzula albida Desfont, Alisma ranunculoides L., Allium acutangulum W., A. ursinum L., Anthericum liliago L., Crocus vernus All., Leucorchis albida Lindl., Halimus portulaccoides Wllr., H. pedunculatus Wllr., Kochia hirsuta N., Statice limonium L., Armeria maritima W., Primula acaulis Jacq., Campanula rapunculus L., Carduus tenuiflorus Curt., Senecio erucifolius L., Artemisia maritima L. α legalis, β gallica, and γ halina, Pyrethrum parthenium L., Cornus suecica L., Torilis nodosa Gärtn., Heliosciadium inundatum Koch, Ranunculus caespitosus Thuill., Oxalis corniculataL., Geranium sanguineum L., G. pratense L., Malva pusilla With., Bulbocapnos digitatus Bernh., Cochlearia officinalis L., C. officinalis β minor Sm., C. danica L., C. anglica L., Lepidium ruderale L., Cakile maritima Sc. β aegyptiaca W., Myriophyllum alterniflorum DC.

Should your stores of these last named plants be exhausted, I would consider it a pleasure to replace them for you as far as possible. Even if I could only hope to increase your collections by a few plants, I am gladly willing to send you my catalogues, so I can supply you from my duplicates according to your own choice.

I further take the liberty to send you a fragment of an exotic Fucus4 for determination, which I obtained through a seaman. Its habitat is unknown to me, and I did not want to attempt its identification due to a lack of adequate literary resources.

I would like to use this opportunity for the friendly request, that you might soon commence work on the intended continuation of Lübeck's Flora by the publication of your cryptogams. I believe I can assure you in advance that by it you would not only earn the gratitude of contemporary botanists, but also gain many young friends for these lower organisms.

Respectfully

Häcker (1844).
Häcker (1844) gives the author as Goodenough.
A genus of marine algae (Phaeophyta). In earlier times the name was often far more loosely applied to brown algae generally. See e.g. Linnaeus (1753).
This list of plant names, which appears in M’s diary/notebook immediately after the copy of his letter to Häcker, may not have been part of that letter.
