To John Foster   24 April 1854

Botanic Garden, Melbourne,

24. April 1854.

Sir

I have the honor to inform you, that I have been requested in the Audit office to apply to you for the formal sanction of my attendants1 employment during the last four month of 1853, which his Excellency previously has been pleased to grant for the purpose of accelerating my researches.

Circumstances, stated in my report from Albury (Jan. 1854)2 obliged me to travel for several months without an attendant, so that the sum, for which I beg to apply, has been partially already saved out of this years estimates.

I have the honor, to be

Sir,

your most obedient and humblest servant

Ferd. Mueller.

Gov. Botanist.

The honorable, the Colonial Secretary.3

Carl Wilhelmi.
M to J. Foster, 15 January 1854.

On 29 April 1854 the Assistant Colonial Secretary, J. Moore, referred M's letter to the Auditor General, E. Grimes, for report. Grimes reported on 9 May: 'Provision has been made for this expenditure & there is no objection to the request'. M was duly informed of the decision. See J. Moore to M, 12 May 1854.
