Dr. F Mueller

Sydney 10th January 1857.

Sir,

Having laid before His Excellency the Governor General, your communication of the 6th1 relative to your proceeding to England for the purpose of completing the descriptive notes on the Botanical collection of the North Australian Expedition, I have the honor to transmit a copy of a letter in reply which I have received from the Colonial Secretary, and in which His Excellency sanctions your proceeding to Melbourne on leave of absence to make the arrangements which would thereby become necessary with reference to your situation as Government Botanist in the Colony of Victoria.

I have the honor &c

A. C. Gregory.

The NSW Colonial Secretary wrote to Gregory, 8 January 1857: 'With reference to your Letter of the 6th Instant in which you submit with your recommendation a letter from Dr Muller the Botanist attached to the North Australian Expedition, suggesting the expediency of his proceeding to England for the purpose of completing the descriptions and arrangements of the Botanical Specimens collected in Northern Australia, I am directed by His Excellency the Governor General to inform you, that he has no possible objection to accede to Mr Mullers request, so far as it is in His power — that is, His Excellency gives his full permission to Mr Muller to proceed to Melbourne to make such arrangements as may be necessary to enable him to proceed to Europe with as little delay as possible — but as it must not be forgotten that Mr Muller is an officer in the Service of the Government of Victoria — a Letter will be addressed to the Chief Secretary of that Colony [see footnotes M to A. Gregory, 6 January 1857] stating the object with which he wishes to proceed to England and conveying His Excellency's wish that should it be possible leave may be granted to him for two years, the period applied for.'
