17th March 1857
Sir,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 26th February addressed to Captn Pasley, and in reply am directed by Mr Duffy1 to convey to you authority for an expenditure not exceeding one hundred pounds, in the purchase of Plants &c for the Melbourne Botanical Gardens, with the understanding that there will not be funds to meet this outlay until the Estimates for the current year are voted.
It will be necessary to admit of the vouchers for this expenditure being hereafter passed at the Treasury that receipts be produced in each instance for the several purchases made, and that details of the articles bought be also furnished.
(Signed) T. C. Balmain
Dr Muëller
Govt Botanist of Victoria
