From Augustus Gregory1    30 May 1857

To Dr Mueller. &c &c.

Sydney 30 May 1857.

Sir,

I have been directed by His Excellency the Governor General to communicate to you the expression of His Excellency's thanks for the zealous manner in which you have performed your duties as Botanist attached to the North Australian Expedition.

I have also to tender you my acknowledgements, of the services you have rendered to the Expedition generally, and beg to assure you that none can more fully appreciate the difficulties and inconveniences, you have had to contend with in the performance of your duties, and I have to congratulate you on the successful result of your labors in the cause of science.

I have &c

A. C. Gregory.

On 26 May 1857 Gregory informed Governor General Denison, through the NSW Colonial Secretary's Department, that M, 'having completed the arrangement of the plants collected in Northern Australia, and fernished his report and notes theron, returned to Melbourne on the 23d instant, to resume his duties under the Government of Victoria. Dr Mueller's engagement with the North Australian Expedition having thus terminated I have to assure His Excellency that throughought the period he has been attatched to it, none could have exhibited a greater desire to further the objects of the Expedition, or a more unreemitting attention to the duties of his appointment.' Denison commented: 'Mr Gregory should communicate to Dr Mueller the expression of my thanks for the zealous manner in which he has performed his duties' (No. 57/2163, 4/3358 letters received, Colonial Secretary's Department, Archives Authority of New South Wales, Sydney).
